Despite outshooting the Flyers 42-24 the Hurricanes fell 5-3 to the home team. The Flyers were a surprising 3 for 3 on the powerplay considering they are 24th in the league this year. Luke Schenn committed an awful four turnovers and probably should be demoted to the AHL. Daniel Briere scored his first goal since his return from injury while Eric Staal scored his 6th of the year. The Flyers continue to play poorly in almost every facet of the game and are lucky to come away with the victory. They were outshot, committed dumb penalties (delay of game), had 6 giveaways compared to 6 takeaways, and lost 36 of 66 faceoffs. The Hurricanes had decided to go with their backup this game after he had a shutout against Ottawa the night before. That turned out to be a mistake as he let in 4 goals on 12 shots. Cam Ward came in a minute into the 2nd and did much better only letting up 1 goal on 11 shots. It would have been interesting to see who won the game if Ward would have started. Bryzgalov played solid in net with a .929 SV% and the 3 goals he let in were very hard to stop, usually right in the slot or closer. The Defense didn't play terrible as a whole except Schenn has really just been awful. Kevin Foster picked up his first goal on the season (good for him). Some problems came from Simmonds being out with a concussion and the fact that the team has not had much time to gel together and form a cohesive defense due to the lack of training camp. Still, turnovers (Schenn), and dumb penalties (Tabolt) are individual skill mistakes not system mistakes. Here are the other games from last night:
Sidney Crosby recorded his 4th goal of the year as the Penguins defeated the Devils 5-1 in Pittsburgh.
The Canadiens filled the back of the net last night defeating the Buffalo Sabres 6-1 (giving Ryan Miller the lost, really rooting against him after the bullshit Flyers game). Rene Bourque scored two of the Canadiens two goals.
The Avalanche came back from 1-0 first period deficit to defeat the Oilers 3-1. P.A. Parenteau scored his 6th goal of the year.
In Toronto, Chris Bourque of the Bruins scored the game's only goal in the first period as the Bruins gained their 13th point of the year.
Rick Nash's goal early in the third period gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead and insurance was added on by Carl Hagelin. Steven Stamkos scored late in the third for the Lightning as they fell 3-2.
The Blue Jackets defeated the Red Wings 4-2 in Cleveland. Artem Anisimov led the Jackets with 2 goals.
Nick Bonino |
The Blackhawks picked up their 14th point of the year in an shootout win in Calgary. Jay Bouwmeester scored with 35 seconds left in the game to give the Flames a 2-1 lead but Marian Hossa tied it up with only 3 seconds left on the clock. Patrick Kane scored the only goal of the shootout.
The offense was out in Anaheim as Nick Bonino scored 2 of the Ducks' 7 goals in their 7-4 win over the Kings. Dustin Brown scored 2 goals for the Kings.
The Sharks lost their first game of the year in a shootout with the Predators. They gained the point to retain the best record in the league. Craig Smith scored the lone shootout goal for the Predators.

Matt Duchene |
Forward- Sidney Crosby- Pittsburgh Was a decent 14-7 in the faceoff circle in addition to his 3 points. Crosby scored a third period goal in addition to assisting on goals by Brandon Sutter and Robert Bortuzzo. Played a surprisingly physical game recording 2 hits on his way to a +4 rating. Spent 4 minutes in the box for two tripping calls probably cause he was too lazy to skate with his man.
Forward- Nick Bonino- Anaheim In only 10 minutes of ice time Bonino got a hat trick and also picked up an assist. He even got time on the powerplay as the third liner picked up a PP goal.
Forward- Steven Stamkos- Tampa Bay Scored two goals for the Bolts including one Powerplay one. Was very aggressive with the body recording 5 hits.
Defense- Drew Doughty- LA Kings Dished out 2 assists in the loss. Had a giveaway that hurt the team but other than that played very good defense. 2 takeaways, 3 hits, and blocked a shot.
Defense- Marc Staal- NY Rangers Played a very good d-man game recording 5 hits, and blocking 3 shots on his way to a +1 rating. Also threw in an assist.
Ray Emery |
Goalie- Ray Emery- Chicago Holy Shit!!!! Ray Emery is on the list... I didn't even know he still played. Anyway, he blocked 42 of 45 shots and came up big in the shootout as the Blackhawks won 3-2.
Goalie- James Reimer- Toronto Was on the losing side of things in Boston but he saved 33 of 34 shots which was good enough for .971 SV%.
Luke Schenn Turnover Watch
Had 6 turnovers going into last night's game against the Hurricanes. He now has 10 which currently puts him at tied for 5th in the league with Turnovers. He is just 3 behind Kris Letang in his attempt to single-handedly ruin the Flyers season. In other news James Van Riemsdyk has scored 4 goals along with an assist for 5 points. Van Riemsdyk also only has 3 turnovers and has stolen the puck 4 times (that's exactly how many the defensemen Schenn has.
